Crawley is a large town just to the South of Gatwick Airport and about 30 Miles south of London.
Back in the 1950’s many new towns were built to rehouse families from London, which had been hit badly by the German Luftwaffe during the second world war.
Home now to over 100,000 residents Crawley has spread from Ifield in the West over to Pound Hill and Maidenbower in the East and Gatwick Airport in the North to Pease Pottage in the South.
The main London to Brighton railway line passes to the east of the town and although Crawley has it’s own central station most commuters catch their trains from the busy Three Bridges station named after the three bridges that were build nearby.
About 7 miles to the west of Crawley is the Sussex market town of Horsham and around the same distance to the east is the East Grinstead which used to have a single line railway connected to Three Bridges that ran past Rowfant, Crawley Down (Grange Road) and up the hill past Imberhorne Lane before joining East Grinstead at the high level station. This line (now called Worth Way) was removed as part of the Beeching recommendations which was really clever as to now get from East Grinstead to Brighton you have to go all the way up to East Croydon in completely the wrong direction and change there. This journey now takes nearly 2 hours instead of less than one hour.
Crawley FC are nicknamed the Red Devils play in the 1st Division. Broadfield Stadium is their ground located to the south of Crawley near Pease Pottage.
